TheGolden Era of Video Games was a time of great technical breakthroughs and game design creativity in arcade games. Video arcade games were designed in a wide variety of genres, while game developers had to work within strict limits of available processor power and memory. This era also saw the rapid spread of video arcades and gamerooms across North America, Europe and Japan. At the same time, video games started to appear in supermarkets, restaurants, bars, pubs, liquor stores, gas stations, bowling alleys storefronts and many other retail establishments looking for extra income and customer traffic.Very popular video arcade games would more than on occasion cause a crush of teenagers at arcades, eager to try the latest in public entertainment.

The two most successful arcade game companies of this era were Namco (the Japanese company that created Pac-Man, Pole Position, and Dig Dug) and Atari (the US-based firm that first introduced video games into arcades). These two companies wrestled for the top slot in American video arcades for several years. Other prominent arcade companies such as Sega, Nintendo, Capcom, Konami, Taito, Williams, Bally / Midway Manufacturing Company, Cinematronics and SNK were among many others also played major roles in the early development of the video arcade game industry.

The arcade game industry truly entered its “Golden Age” in the late 70’s and early 80’s,with consumer awareness and market penetration of video arcade machines in bars, pubs, malls, storefronts and restaurants rising rapidly with introductions of such classic video arcade machines likeAsteroids, Space Invaders,Galaxian, Donkey Kong, and the timeless video arcade classic game, Pac-Man.

Is it really possible to learn boxing online? Yes, absolutely.

I truly wish that when I was learning to box, I could have tapped into the massive knowledge bank of the internet, to pick up hints and tips. Nowadays I can watch fights from all over the world at a touch of the button. The internet means that we can all see new and different fighting styles, and apply these to our own boxing training.Just like any skill, to become good at boxing, you need practice, practice practice. Using online boxing videos as a reference point or step-by-step guide, you can learn new skills at home, at times to suit you. In this way, your love of boxing can slot in with your other life commitments. You can practise footwork drills, slips, punching, visualisation, shadow boxing, weight training, and even running – without needing access to a gym or boxing class.

Why use online tutorials?

Boxing gyms have a reputation of being intimidating, plus starting anything new can seem hard and you might not know where to start, or where to go. Using online resources is a great way to start learning about boxing and different techniques. Learning boxing online makes it easier to get started and learn the basics, before moving onto the more technical aspects of boxing. Watching boxing videos is a great way to find out about the boxing stance, parrying, and throwing punches, as well as giving you an idea of the level of fitness you want to achieve.

Knowledge really is POWER!!

Having just that little bit of information can boost your confidence greatly, and help you to learn what kinds of punches you need to employ, and when you need to throw them. In addition, just knowing the names of certain moves is a great help as you start to learn your boxing skills. The more you watch, read and train, the more you will understand and enjoy each boxing video. The joy of such online resources is that they are available whenever you have the time to look at them, daytimes, weekends, evenings, up to 24 hours a day if you so desire! You can stop and start each session, dip in and out and work to your max, or just enjoy the entertainment value whilst making a mental note of the skills you are watching. As well as being interesting to watch, online videos often include references to further information sources, such as with our Sneakpunch videos where we often include references to sections of our website, where you can read or watch more about the skills being shown.

I am not interesting in sparring/fighting, but want to add boxing training to my fitness routine – can learning boxing online help?

Yes, again absolutely, whether you want to improve your technique for the ring or just for fitness, learning how to master the techniques is imperative. When you perform actions correctly, the many benefits include saving energy, keeping balance, speeding up your technique and avoiding injury.Boxing training is one of the toughest ways to train and as such provides huge cardiovascular benefits for people who train regularly. Doing a boxing workout alongside your usual routines will improve your overall fitness and you will definitely feel the benefit during your other workouts. One of the best things about boxing training is that as you improve, you will be able to work harder, so the routines won’t ever feel easy! You will always be pushed to your max, which is the best way to improve fitness and maintain motivation.

How do I start?

You can start today – right here – right now.

Our first season of “How to Box Videos” include demonstrations of all the boxing basics. These key skills are a perfect way to start. You should practise these regularly and aim to perfect these skills as they will provide the foundation for all of your boxing training.

For example, the boxing stance is the first and most important skill to master. Trust me when I tell you that in 9 fights out of 10, the boxer with the correct stance and best footwork is the one that goes on to win. With that in mind, let’s begin with the stance…

The boxing stance refers to the way boxer stands. This involves the positioning of the feet, direction of the hips, the bend of the knees, the placement of your arms, hands and shoulders.

Boxing

Whether you have your left or right foot forward depends on whether you are left-handed or right-handed.

The stance is crucial to good boxing, so take a look at the video to the right and give the “Boxing Stance” a go!

Once you have perfected your stance, the following benefits will come naturally to you:

  • Harder Punching
  • Better Defence
  • Good Balance
  • Quicker Movement

Conversely a bad stance can cause these problems:

  • Leaning
  • Bringing your feet together
  • Being off balance
  • Moving slowly
PROTECT YOURSELF!

If you are happy with your stance, the next thing to think about is your hands. Your hands need to be in the right place, and form your ‘guard’ . In my opinion, all great boxers are also fantastic defenders. In fact, you can’t box without defending, and without having your guard correctly in place. Without a great guard, you are in grave danger if you set foot in the ring! If you have your guard in place and you’ve practised it so that it comes as second nature, then you will be ready to get in the ring and defend yourself. In order to box well, it is necessary to defend oneself and avoid being hit. All boxers will get hit, and have to learn to deal with this, but of course it is best if you manage to be hit as little as possible!

In summary a good defence strategy and a sound stance are two fundamental parts of learning to box. Master these and you are on your way. Once you are happy with these skills, you may wish to employ the help of a willing friend to test this out!

Ok, so now you know how to stand, balance, move, stay standing, and also how to defend yourself….. now you are ready to learn some punching skills – the fun begins!

Please remember though, that it is very easy to over-extend when punching (especially when you are practising in the air without making contact). Take care with this as over-extension can result in painful elbow injury. With that in mind, find out how to avoid injury and make the most of your boxing training with our FREE e-Book.

PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT!

Not everyone can get to a bag when they are training, but they are a great bit of kit. They are not a huge cost and then you just need a little space to hang it. And If you learn how to use the bag properly, it can bring your boxing on, in leaps and bounds and it is an amazing workout – you will see the weight fly off.

Remember though!! always wrap your hands and wear some good gloves. A common problem when beginners first start on the bag is injuring their wrists, so make sure you get your hands and wrists protected before going at it on the heavy bag.

If you’re not sure how to wrap your hands have a look at this video to see how it’s done.

If you need a few ideas on combinations for the bags, take a look at our 7 different punch bag combination videos to help you along the way. Remember to start slowly and get the technique correct, speed and power will naturally come as you become more confident in the combinations.

Just in case you are finding it hard to follow some of the videos we have even created a few “Technique Posts” to drill down to the core components of different techniques. These have been written to help give you a better understanding of how certain moves should be performed.

We have included diagrams and handy arrows to show you which parts of the body should be moving, to keep you balanced and “technique perfect”.
